We Need To Save The Rhinos

Rhinoceros poaching has been making headlines again recently, with a chilling story that unfolded in South Africa. In a shocking twist of events, rhino poachers were reportedly eaten alive by a pride of lions after they broke into a South African game reserve with the intent to kill a herd of rhinos. This incident highlights the extreme measures poachers take and the desperate situation rhinos face across Africa.

The Reality of Rhino Poaching

These poachers arrived well-prepared, carrying weapons and supplies to sustain them for several days. However, their primary tools were axes—brutal instruments used to hack off rhino horns. This barbaric method leaves rhinos to suffer a slow and painful death if they are not already killed by the attack.

In the last decade, South Africa alone has lost over 7,000 rhinos, with the majority of these losses occurring in Kruger National Park. Spanning 19,485 km², this vast protected area on South Africa’s northeastern border with Mozambique has long been a target for poaching gangs.

Kruger National Park’s Efforts to Combat Poaching

The South African government, alongside international donors, has implemented new initiatives to protect rhino populations within Kruger National Park. Anti-poaching army units have been deployed to patrol the region and deter poachers. While these measures have made significant progress in curbing poaching within Kruger, poachers are now shifting their focus to surrounding countries that lack similar resources and protection strategies.

Why Are Rhinos Being Poached?

The demand for rhino horn stems from long-held beliefs in its medicinal and virile properties, particularly in parts of Asia. However, modern studies have shown that these beliefs are emotional rather than scientific. Rhino horn is composed of keratin—the same material as human hair and nails—offering no proven medicinal benefits. Despite this, demand persists, driving the illegal poaching industry and placing rhinos on the brink of extinction.

A Grim Future for The Rhino

If poaching continues at its current rate, rhinos could be extinct within the next 10 years. This alarming prediction underscores the urgent need for global action to protect these incredible animals.

Conservation Efforts: Australia’s Contribution

While the situation is dire, conservation programs around the world are offering hope for rhino populations. Australia, for example, is playing a crucial role in preserving rhinos through a successful breeding program at Monarto Zoo in South Australia.

• Satara, a dominant breeding bull, and Umqali, one of the breeding females, are Southern White Rhinos directly imported from Kruger National Park.

• The program has seen encouraging success, with five rhino calves born at the zoo in recent years.

Such initiatives are essential in ensuring the survival of rhino species for future generations.
