Bastille Day Paris

14th July 1789 marks the storming of the Bastille in Paris, every year since then a French National Day and countrywide celebrations are held to commemorate it. A vibrant celebration that literally takes over the whole city of Paris for the day; it begins with the oldest tradition of the Military parade. The parade starts at about 10:30 am on the Champs Elysees in front of the President, French officials, and foreign guests. Tens of thousands of people line the streets to catch a glimpse of the parade; face painting, flags flying, and the nation’s spirit at its highest.

Get there early

If you want to be able to see anything at all find a spot along the barricade and stay there. Plan your trip into the city; you will find that a lot of the central metro stations and roads will be closed; so you might have to get as close as possible then walk the rest of the way. Another option is to score yourself a seat on the second level of a café along the Champs Elysees. You can enjoy a coffee and be semi-detached from the crowds down below.

Bastille Day Paris Military Parade

The Military Parade is spectacular and it is quite a prestigious event showing the strength of a nation. The Military planes and helicopters do amazing acrobatics leaving streams of colours through the sky as they soar past. The streets are buzzing, the people are chattering and it transforms the city into one big party. Free concerts all over the city, market stands, workshops for kids, and so much food; there is something to see or do everywhere you turn

Bastille Day Paris Plane fly over

You may hear the distinct sound of a party, it’s probably coming from the local fire station. The French have a tradition of Fire-fighters parties. There is a list of fire stations that take part in this tradition; where you can party the night away with the brave men and women who make up the French fire-fighters. The bells ring; the station is decked out with live bands, DJ’s, drinks, and of course there is dancing all night long. They usually charge a small entrance fee or donation that goes back to the station; it’s a win-win you are helping a good cause and getting a good party.

Fireworks spectacular Eiffel Tower – Bastille Day Paris

Where ever you are in the city you will find an event to celebrate Bastille Day; grab yourself a spot on the Champs De Mars (Grass in front of the Eiffel Tower), and wait for the magic because at 11 pm the firework extravaganza lights up the night sky behind the Eiffel Tower. To make your night even more magical; they usually host a live music concert at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. What more could you ask for; sipping wine gazing up at the Eiffel Tower as the fireworks light up the night sky; well worth taking on the crowds for a good spot

Some things you should keep in mind

  • There is no alcohol permitted on the Champs De Mars after 4 pm
  • Toilets can be a bit of a problem; well the lack of Public Toilets anyway. Nearby cafes don’t take it very well if you try to use their facilities for free; just buy yourself a coffee and duck in to use their toilet.
  • Bastille day is Pickpocket’s big payday; with people distracted by the events, it’s the prime opportunity to rip tourists off. Only carry a small amount of cash; stash it close to your body and DO NOT take valuables with you. Read about our post-Paris Tourist Traps on what to look out for.

A little bit more Romantic!

This is for those love birds who want to get all romantic and don’t feel like being in the crowds. Take a cruise on the Seine; you will have awesome views of the fireworks through the windows on the boat; in your own romantic and comfortable surroundings.
