The Mighty Mountains Switzerland, what makes them so special? well, 60% of the land in Switzerland is made up of mountains; they range all different shapes, sizes, and world records! These are just some of the Mighty Mountains Switzerland has to offer; each with their own unique experience for example the world’s steepest cog rail or an open-top cable car! The ride up is just as spectacular as the views from the top.
Mount Pilatus – Mighty Mountains Switzerland
Mount Pilatus overlooks Lake Lucerne, it is not the highest of the Alps but it sure is beautiful. It is here you have some exciting options to reach the top of the mountain; if you are fit and keen you can hike, however Mount Pilatus; is home to the world’s steepest cog railway which is way more fun! It has a whopping 48% gradient; if you choose to take it down the mountain; let me tell you it is a very thrilling experience. There is also the option of the cable car “Dragon Ride”. At the top, you will be admiring the panoramic views of the Swiss Alps, blue lakes, and gorgeous valleys.
Stanserhorn
Stans is another beautiful Swiss village just outside Lucerne; it is from here that you will be able to go up the all-mighty Stanserhorn Mountain (1900m).
To get up the mountain you will board a vintage funicular train; it will whisk you through the blooming flowers, lush green surroundings. You will then change to the unique open top aerial cable car. These cable cars are amazing! When you get on; be sure to make your way to the top section of the car; it can get quite cramped so just stay calm. The cable car takes you up the side of the mountains with the most spectacular views of the surrounding valleys.
At the top of the Stanserhorn the views will blow you away; from the platform, the revolving restaurant (before you get any ideas yes, it is VERY expensive); or if you are up for a bit of a hike; you can go further up the mountain to Marmot Park. The experience at the top of the Stanserhorn is surreal; it is beautiful and peaceful, and I would defiantly recommend it.
Jungfrau – The Top of Europe

From the beautiful town of Lauterbrunnen take a day trip to Jungfrau; the insane mountain is 3454 meters above sea level; it is the proud title holder of a few world records which include the highest railway station and post office. Jungfrau is often referred to as The Top of Europe!
Your magical day trip will start off with taking the train from the town of Lauterbrunnen to Kleine Scheidegg; at this station, you will need to change trains it will say Jungfraujoch via Wengen. There is always plenty of staff who is there to help so if you feel a bit lost just ask. The train journey is all a part of the experience; the train will weave its way through a tunnel that is carved into the mountain. There will be one-stop; the train will stop for you to get out and take pictures about halfway up. (Don’t dilly dally; as they only give you 5 or so mins on the viewing platform; then the doors to the train close and your off again. It takes about 90 mins from the town to reach the top so just allow yourself plenty of time.
Top of Europe
Once you reach the Top of Europe; you will get off the train and enter a big meeting point which has a restaurant and shop; on the right-hand side is a table where you can get a tourist stamp; to verify you made it to the top of Europe. (I would not recommend getting it in your actual passport; just get it on your ticket or a piece of paper). Now you are standing 3454 meters above sea level which means there is a big difference in altitude; it will affect people differently, but please make sure you move slowly and DO NOT run otherwise you will become out of breath very fast. Drink plenty of water and keep your body hydrated.
Follow the map around to the activities

The whole experience is very well mapped out; you move through the exhibits and activities in one big circle. First, you will walk through a hallway full of pictures and facts on how the railway was made; there is a tribute to the men and women who gave their lives to make it happen. After that, you will come across a room which is a movie presentation of railway which is pretty cool. Moving on from there you can visit the Ice Palace; very quirky; you can walk through different sculptures made completely out of ice. Then the big guns, the outdoor adventure park; you can pay some extra money and go on a toboggan or zip line. It is lots of fun and I think worth the money.
The next stop would be to the outdoor viewing platform; you will be standing in the middle of the snow-capped Alps; breathing in the freshest mountain air. There is a Swiss flag at the top which makes a beautiful photo; if you can get close enough without anyone in your shot!
Lindt Shop at the Top
As you make your way back to the entrance/exit you will come across a HUGE Lindt shop; Christmas has come early they have an abundance of varieties of delicious Swiss chocolate. They have a pick and pack section; where you basically get to pick and choose the flavored Lindt balls; however be careful as it goes on weight and can get quite expensive.
Handy Hints
- Dress in layers; it can be freezing at the top although when the sun is out it can be quite warm; so to be safe wear layers that you can add and remove.
- Pack sunscreen and sunglasses
- Jungfrau is 3454 meters above sea level; which means the altitude is different, DO NOT RUN walk slowly, and ensure you are keeping hydrated
- The food in the restaurant/café is very expensive so pack some snacks and water from the local store in Lauterbrunnen.
- Take your own lunch but defiantly buy yourself some chocolate at the Lindt factory, totally worth the money
- The tickets are checked on the train in both directions; so DO NOT lose your ticket for the return journey or you will have to buy it again. Here is a website link to a PDF information brochure and map of Jungfrau; so you can check it out before you go.
Jungfrau – Live Webcams
Jungfrau is quite expensive so make sure you budget enough money to go up the mountain. I mean come on seriously; how many times are you going to get to say that you have been to the top of Europe? Some things in Travel are worth splashing the cash for and this is one of them.
This site below is fantastic for information on the trains and tickets; however, the best thing is the live web cams: You are treated to a live webcam preview of Jungfrau. I would recommend checking it out on the morning of going up the mountain; so you know what you are in for.
