The best Carry-on and Suitcases for travelling

Whether you live out of your suitcase, go on long trips or even short trips for that matter. Have a good suitcase is essential. Like a builder, the job is so much easier when you have the right kind of tools; the same goes for your trips. (With luggage of course) The other important factor is quality, a suitcase or bag is not something you should get cheap, you don’t want it falling apart on you at the airport and having to buy a case 20 times the price that it should be. Over the years I have been through my fair share of luggage. To save you the pain and money here is the best suitcases and carry-on bags for travelling.

The best carry-on bags

When choosing the best bag to take as carry on, it will depend on the length of your trip. If you are going for a weekend trip a hard carry-on case would be beneficial, or if you are going on a longer trip and have a checked bag already you might just need a backpack. Be sure to make sure that backpack can double as your day bag, while on the trip as well. Your carry-on bag should be always held close to you. This is where you should pack all of your valuable items such as passport, phone, laptops or Tables/iPad should fit comfortably in your carry-on bag.

For your carry-on bag, you must adhere to the airline’s size specifications. In general, most airlines are usually around 21 inches in height. (Be sure to check your chosen airline before flying)

Weekend, overnight or carry-on duffel

This Duffel is of great quality, is 22inches in length, it has plenty of space inside with pockets galore. The best part about it is there is a sneaky pocket for a pair of shoes. That way you don’t have to mix your nice clean clothes with your trainers.

The Best Carry-on and Suitcases for travelling
Samsonite Hardcase Carry on or weekend bag

Samsonite is not the cheapest suitcase out there, but I can guarantee you they are quality, their luggage will last you a very long time. I have tried the cheap cases which are flimsy, crack and you end up replacing them repeatedly. Do yourself a favour, shout yourself a carry on/weekend size and a medium-size samsonite case. You will not regret it. Back to the weekend case, this one is ultra-light, hardwearing and has easy-glide wheels. The other thing you should look for is the handle, the handle must be a pull up from the back side of the case this supports the weight of the case and contents.

Tips for Buying a New Suitcase

You may not think it but your suitcase can make or break the comfort of your trip, it needs to be durable, easy to maneuver, and the right size. A suitcase that is too big can be awkward to move around and you have the ability to pack too much stuff into it (which could mean going over your weight allowance). Anywhere between 50-60cm in height will comfortably hold 25-30kg which is usually the maximum weight allowance for large airlines.

  • Look for a full retractable handle to wheel the case
  • A handle on the top and side to make it easier to carry
  • The wheels on your case will cop a hammering look for the smaller wheels that are close to the body of the suitcase, this way they have less chance of snapping off.
  • Look at the zipper, you can get hard cases with an expandable zipper it may seem like a good idea however it allows for movement in the middle of the case which becomes hard to manoeuvre. I would suggest a hard case one that closes on itself as it strengthens the case and doesn’t allow for over-packing.
  • For a good medium, size suitcase expect to pay between $250-$500, this is money well spent!

Samsonite S’Cure Spinner

This one is my favourite; I have had mine for 6 years now. It has lived on the road with me all over Europe, it has been thrown, pushed, dropped by various luggage handlers and it is still going strong. I absolutely love this suitcase and I am sure you will too. It comes in various sizes, however, go for the medium size which is 69-79L, this size is easy to manoeuvre, strong and you can only fit around 30kgs in it. This is an important factor to avoid getting too excited with packing and having to pay excess luggage fees at the airport.

Samsonite also has a guarantee on their products. If something breaks e.g., the case gets dropped and the wheel breaks. All you need to do is contact Samsonite, they get you in touch with the closest Samsonite dealer and they will replace the part for free.

American Tourist Tourister Soundbox

American Tourister is another big player in the suitcase game, places like Strandbags and Amazon carry their luggage line. They are generally good suitcases; and are a little bit cheaper than Samsonite. However, most of the hardcover cases are made with the zip which becomes flimsy if overpacked. They are affordable and will do the job, but don’t overpack it or put too much pressure on it as they have a tendency of cracking. Remember you get what you pay for!

Don’t waste your hard-earned money on a cheap suitcase, It’s not worth it. Look through the Samsonite range, there will be something that suits you, follow our tips for buying a new suitcase and invest in the best. Just remember, look at the handles, wheels, size and DO NOT buy a hard case that has zips. Happy Shopping.
